Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions about starting therapy, how sessions work, fees and support.
Getting started
How do I book an appointment?
You can book by completing the form on our Contact page, calling +27 66 230 9878 or emailing info@soulfulpsychology.co.za. We’ll get back to you to confirm a time that suits you.
Do I need a referral?
No, you don’t need a referral to book. If a doctor or another professional has suggested therapy, you’re welcome to mention it when you get in touch.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is a chance to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what brings you to therapy, what you’d like to change and how we might work together. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re comfortable with.
Do I need to fill in any forms?
Yes — before your first session we ask new clients to complete a short intake and consent form. You can complete it online ahead of time.
About therapy
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you’re working on and your goals. Some concerns can be addressed in a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll review progress together regularly so you always know where things stand.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. What you share in therapy is kept confidential. There are a few limited exceptions required by law or ethics — for example, where there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else. These are explained in full in our consent form.
Which approach will you use?
Therapy is tailored to you. Depending on your needs, sessions may draw on Interactional Pattern Analysis, a Person-Centered approach and BWRT — often in combination.
What is BWRT?
BWRT (Brain Working Recursive Therapy) is a structured approach that uses natural psychological processes to retrain automatic response patterns, such as anxious or fearful reactions. Read more about BWRT.
Do both partners need to attend couples therapy?
Couples therapy works best when both partners are involved. If your partner isn’t ready to attend, individual therapy can still help you understand and change your side of the pattern.
Fees & payment
Can I claim from my medical aid?
Depending on your scheme and plan, you may be able to claim. Please see our Fees & Medical Aid page and check your benefits with your scheme.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations and missed appointments may be charged — see our cancellation policy for details.
Do you work with companies?
Yes. We offer Corporate Wellness Programs tailored to your organisation, from talks and workshops to ongoing programs.
Urgent support
What if I’m in crisis?
Soulful Psychology is not an emergency service. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 112 or go to your nearest hospital emergency unit. For urgent emotional support, SADAG’s Suicide Crisis Line is available on 0800 567 567.
